World Cup bracket

The 2006 FIFA World Cup begins tomorrow at noon ET when Germany face Costa Rica in the opening match. Below is my tournament bracket for the office pool. The goal is to earn the most points, which are awarded thusly:

Group stage: 1 point for predicting the result (winner/loser), 3 extra points for getting the correct score, of each game. 2 points for each team correctly predicted to make it to the second round. Note: the first round contains 32 teams in 8 groups of 4. Each team plays the other teams in their group once. The top two teams from each group advance.
Second round: 2 points for result, 4 extra points for score.
Quarterfinals: 3 points for result, 6 extra points for score.
Semifinals: 5 points for result, 10 extra for score.
Final: 10 for result, 20 extra for score.

I'll update the chart after each day's games with the actual results and my scores.

I think you should get half a point for guessing the score right for at least one team.

Does this mean we won't play Iran? By we I mean, the US.

I think the only way the U.S could play Iran is if both teams make it to the semifinals. So, no, we won't be seeing that matchup.

Dang, curt.
You are doing really awesome so far.

I'm pleasantly surprised. I need to get a few more of the scores right, though, if I want to have any kind of shot at winning the pool. As of the S.Korea-Togo match, I'm 6 points behind the leader, but there are a lot of games left, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Bold choice with guessing so little tie games but it seems to be working out for you.

You gave no props to the US or Ghana eh?

I predicted USA would beat the Czech republic, but that didn't happen. At this point, I need the U.S. to beat Ghana on Thursday. If they don't, then they can say goodbye to the round of 16, and I can say goodbye to those points for predicting they'll advance.

Based solely on their previous games it seems US and Ghana will be very interesting.

a zero zero tie? Come on people...

Posted by rss on June 18, 2006

are you getting close to the lead now after picking up 3 +4s in the last couple days?

Posted by Steve Schroeder on June 20, 2006

I'm closing the gap, but as of yesterday (after Saudia Arabia vs. Ukraine) was in 6th. If we were just going by correct results, I'd be tied for the lead, but others have predicted more actual scores than I have, which really add up. I think today's matches move me up to 5th.

Didn't someone just kill the president of Paraguay with a fork?
