Jury duty

I got a summons for jury duty the other day but I have to request a postponement because I'm going to be out of town. I'm a little disappointed.

Why do so many people dislike jury duty? I have this impression (which could easily be way off base) that people tend to avoid jury duty like the plague. Is it just because you have to miss your regular job, and therefore earn less money that pay period? Are there other reasons?

Updated March 16: My summons has been deferred. I'm now scheduled for may.

I have personally gotten out of Jury duty 3 times, not because I desire to miss out, but because I was out of town. I too, have a strong desire to do it, see what it's like. It's kind of exciting to me. I hope the guy next to me will pull a pineapple out of his brief case.

i think jury duty is fun - if you get a good case.

the first jury selection i went to was for a civil suit - a woman was suing another woman for 'emotional distress' as a result of a car accident in which the other woman was at fault. i was rolling my eyes already and the judge said the trial would take four days - i immediately raised my hand and told them i wouldn't make a good juror and got myself out of that mess. fuck no, i'm not listening to that bullshit.

after that, i went to a jury selection for a DUI. they skipped over a bunch of other potential jurors to pick me after i displayed a good knowledge of the court system (due to my job). the trial was really interesting and kind of fun. plus you get a rush of POWER over other people's lives muahahaha.

i think i've been drawn two or three times. never got called in, though. actually, one time i called in each night for the whole month. you know, to listen to the message and see if my group would be summoned the next morning? it was never called, but later i got a letter warning me that if i missed jury duty again i would be held in contempt of court. turns out i was calling every night for the wrong month.

I've been summoned three times in Alaska, but I had to decline because I was going to UAF. I've always wanted to serve though -- I hope I get a Seattle summons soon!

I've thought it'd be interesting since the time my mom told us (after she'd finished serving) that they had to decide whether a letter opener could be considered a deadly weapon.
